In a way, Pubkey is on a similar quest: While rich people use cryptocurrencies to buy extremely expensive memberships in exclusive restaurants, Pubkey’s owners want to use Bitcoin as a force to bring people together. Most recently, it was home to a pub called Formerly Crow’s, which aimed to create a safe zone from the area’s “fancy cocktail bars and sorority boy hellholes”. The bar took over a basement space at 85 Washington Place off Sixth Avenue that over the last hundred years has been home to various dive bars popular with New York University students and local rabble-rousers.
